The Marshall Lions had their sixth consecutive big win of the season Friday at Red Hill. The Lions scored three times in the first four minutes,  led 35-0 at the half and went on to a 49-6 win.
Marshall started the game with a big 54-yard pass play as quarterback Jacob Duncan connected with Rodney Troutman, and the Lion big man bolted down the field to the Salukis’ one yard line. Andre Strohm finished the job with his shortest TD run of season.Daniel Littlejohn’s extra point kick was good for a 7-0 Lion lead with only 42 seconds off the clock.
Red Hill fumbled the kickoff return, and Cole Rice recovered the ball to deny the Salukis their turn to play.
Jacob Duncan carried the ball and connected with Troutman for a first down. After another carry, he connected with Taylor Sanders in the endzone for a second Lion touchdown. Littlejohn’s kick was on target, and the Lions led 14-0 with 8:55 still to go in the first quarter.
Tyler Tussey carried the Littlejohn kickoff to the Saluki 25 yard line, where he was brought down by Logan Goldsberry. Strohm and Duncan thwarted Tussey’s carry attempts, and on the third down, Strohm intercepted a pass by Blake Adams and ran 20 yards for a TD. The extra point was good and Marshall led 21-0 with 7:48 on the clock.
Tyler Skaggs received the Littlejohn kickoff, and was brought down by Justin Lewis.
Adams carried the ball for nine yards and was brought down by Shaun Ahlers, but Red Hills’ hopes of a first down were dashed on the next play when the quarterback was sacked by Cole Rice.
Back in possession of the ball, Marshall advanced rapidly downfield on carries by Kody Kile and Brock Hook but lost the ball on downs. As the quarter came to an end, Red Hill finally managed a first down in spite of tackles by Dalton McNeely, Hook and Duncan.
On their next series, McNeely held the Dawgs to a loss. They were soon forced to punt by the tough Lion defense, and Marshall took control on the 40 yard line.
The Lions had barely gotten started, when Strohm broke loose and zigzagged 60 yards across the field for a touchdown. Littlejohn’s kick was good, and Marshall led 28-0.
On their next series, the Salukis were held to a paltry four-yard gain before being forced to punt.
Sanders returned the punt for 30 yards to the 38 yard line, and after penalties called on both sides, Duncan connected with Ahlers for 25 yards. But Marshall then fumbled the ball. It was recovered by Trevor Richards, and Red Hill took over possession on the 18 yard line.
The powerful Lion defense wouldn’t budge from the line of scrimmage, and the Salukis were forced to punt.
The Lions took over on their 40. It only took one play for Duncan to connect with Ahlers, who bolted down the field for a another Lion touchdown. The Littlejohn point after was good, and Marshall led 35-0.
Red Hill took over on the 29 yard line and soon lost the ball on downs.
Hook started the Lions’ series with a big 33-yard run, He added a couple smaller gains to bring the Lions to the 4 yard line, where the Lions lost control to a Red Hill interception.
The Lions defense, led by Zach Bartnick, Dalton McNeely, Adam Kendall, Troutman and Duncan continued to hammer the Dawgs and kept them from moving forward just before the halftime break, and the pounding continued as the third quarter began.
Back in possession, Duncan kept the ball for nearly 50 yards on two carries and yet another Lion TD. The extra point kick was good, and Marshall led 42-0. This 40-point lead prompted a continuous clock for most of the remainder of the game.
Tyler Skaggs recieved the Littlejohn kickoff and was brought down by Chad Leitch. The tough Lion defense, led by Jared Boyll, denied the Salukis a first down and forced a punt.
Rice garnered a first down on a ten-yard run up the middle, and Kody Kile blasted his way to a touchdown with gains of 56 yards on three carries. The extra point was good, and Marshall led 49-0.
In the final minutes, Coach Evers made some personnel changes. In spite of tackles by McQuaid Peterson, Logan Goldsberry, John Kuhn, Zack Tharp, and Nolan Miller, the Salukis managed to score with a 20-yard pass to Jacob Wirth. The Lions blocked the extra point kick and held to a 49-6 lead.
Andy Blankenship received the final kickoff and took it to the 23 yard line. Derrick Davidson and Taylor Padgett generated a first down, and at the buzzer, it was Marshall 49, Red Hill 6.
This Friday the undefeated Lions will host the undefeated Casey Warriors in the biggest matchup of the season. The game starts at 7pm.
