The Marshall Lions traveled to Lawrenceville Friday night, October 16th, hoping to extend their six-game winning streak.
The Lions were successful against the Indians as they took the victory 48-23.
Luke Nelson started the game by kicking off to the Indians. Rodney Troutman and Jared Boyll tacked the receiver at
the 30-yard line to begin Lawrenceville’s first drive. In addition to Troutman and Boyll, Trey Trudeau, Jacob Duncan
and Jacob Minnich helped hold the Indians on downs, forcing them to punt on fourth down.
On Marshall’s first possession,
Andre Strohm got the ball and almost broke loose from the tacklers, but was finally brought down by Cody McKinney after a
10-yard gain. Taylor Duncan completed a couple of passes and the offensive line did a great job opening up holes for Strohm.
Marshall continued to march up the field. From the five-yard line, T. Duncan ran the ball into the end zone, but it
was called back on an illegal formation penalty against the Lions. On the next play, T. Duncan found Austin Wetnight in the
end zone for a touch down pass. Nelson kicked the extra point and Marshall led 7-0 with 7:20 in the first quarter.
Marshall’s front line again did an exceptional job of stopping the Indians from gaining much yardage. On third
down, Lawrenceville’s quarterback Logan Cummins found a receiver for a first down. From the Marshall 43-yard line, Cummins
completed a short pass. The ball was fumbled and T. Duncan jumped on the ball recovering for the Lions.
On first down, T. Duncan hit Dustin Morey in stride for a 51-yard pass play. T. Duncan took the ball in for another
score on a quarterback sneak. The extra point was no good but Marshall had a 13-0 lead.
In their next possession, the Indians pushed the ball up the field and were on the 25-yard line when Dalton Sanders
and Minnich sacked Cummins for a five-yard loss. The first quarter came to an end on that play.
The second quarter began with a short complete pass. On fourth down, the Indians tried a reverse play, but were called
for holding. The ball was turned over to the Lions on the 24-yard line.
Strohm had an eight-yard gain, before T. Duncan kept the ball on the next down and took it 67 yards for another Lion
touchdown. The extra point was good and Marshall had a 20-0 lead.
On the kick off, the receiver fumbled the ball, but once he picked it up he was off to the end zone, taking it all
the way in for a touch down. With the extra point, the Indians were on the board 20-7.
Marshall was four and out and had to punt the ball back to Lawrenceville. Jacob Minnich was out of the game with a
hip/back injury. John Kuhn came in to replace him.
The next series of plays was all Lions. Lawrenceville fumbled on first down for a loss of yards. They fumbled the snap
on second down and then Cummins was sacked by Sanders on third down.
The Indians had to punt the ball on fourth down. Sanders blocked the punt and took the ball in for a score. Nelson hit
the point after and Marshall increased its lead 27-7.
After a series of plays, the Lions took over on downs at their own 20-yard line. T. Duncan found Jacob Duncan for a
75-yard pass play for another Marshall touchdown. With the extra point, the score was Marshall 34 and Lawrenceville 7.
Lawrenceville
had a good kick off return to the 45-yard line. On the first down, Tyler Bishop sacked the quarterback. The first half ended
with Marshall leading 34-7.
On the first down play of the second half, Andre Strohm broke loose from the tacklers and took the ball all the way
into the end zone for a 68-yard run. Nelson hit the extra point and the Lions led 41-7.
Dustin Morey went out of the game with a knee injury. The Indians went three downs before they had to punt. Sanders
almost had a hand on this punt.
Patrick Parsley took the punt return and was tackled at the 36-yard line. Strohm broke
loose again but was tripped up by a Lawrenceville at the Lawrenceville 32-yard line. T. Duncan attempted a short pass to Jordan
Grooms which was incomplete.
Strohm picked up another 12 yards. T. Duncan found Grooms in the end zone but the pass was broken up by an Indian defender.
Strohm ran for a first down for the Lions. On the next play, Strohm found the end zone for a ten-yard touchdown run. With
the extra point, Marshall extended their lead 48-7 with 6:24 left in the third quarter. Dalton McNeely came out of the game
with a knee injury.
Lawrenceville returned the kick off to the Marshall 45-yard line. The Indians had some success in moving the ball up
the field. On fourth down, the quarterback pitched the ball out to his running back for a first down.
On first down, Lawrenceville fumbled the ball, but recovered it for a three-yard loss. The Indians got back to the
original line of scrimmage before they fumbled the snap. Lawrenceville recovered the fumble, but had an eight yard loss.
On
fourth down and 18 yards to go, Cummins passed deep to his receiver. Taylor Sanders was called for pass interference. The
penalty resulted in an automatic first down and half the distance to the goal. The third quarter ended on that play.
The
Indians had the ball on the 10-yard line on first and 10. McKinney ran it in for a touchdown. The extra point was good and
the Indians added to their score making it 48-14.
Coach Todd Evers used this opportunity to allow his reserves to get some playing time. Michael Brown, Kody Kile, Nick
Kahl, Taylor Sanders, Zach Bartnick, Rodney Troutman, McQuaid Peterson, Paul Wieland, Taylor Maurer, Brock Hook, and Adam
Kendall were all seeing playing time.
Brock Hook took the kick off. T. Sanders was in as quarterback and Kile was the running back. On third down, T. Sanders
had to fall on a bad snap. On fourth down, the punt snap went over Troutman’s head for a Lawrenceville safety. The score
was 48-16.
Troutman kicked off for Marshall with 8:57 left in the game. McKinney returned the ball to Marshall’s 35-yard
line. After a seven-yard gain, T. Sanders and Austin Osborn brought down the Indian runner. Kahl and Brown kept the running
back from getting into the end zone, but on the next play, Lawrenceville ran the ball in. The extra point made the score 48-23.
Zach McLennan, Justin Lewis, Nolan Miller and Austin Zerrusen were in the game for some valuable playing time. T. Maurer
recovered the on-side kick by the Indians. Marshall had to punt on fourth down.
The game ended with Lawrenceville in possession of the ball. Marshall improved their record to 7-1 with a victory score
of 48-23.
Coach Todd Evers said that the momentum of seven wins in a row is big going into the playoffs. "We need to win against
Red Hill next week," said Coach Evers. He reported that Minnich had gone out of the game with a hip/back injury, McNeely had
a knee injury and Dustin Morey had a bruised knee. Colby Boyer was already out with surgery.
The Lions host Red Hill next Friday for their last regular season game. It will also be Senior Night.
