Lions take easy win over Lawrenceville
The Marshall Lions made it seven wins in a row as they defeated the Lawrenceville Indians 48-6 Friday night.
The Lions got on the scoreboard quickly with a 35-yard touchdown pass and run by Ryan Shumaker. Luke Nelson added the
extra point and the Lions led 7-0.
Next came a seven-yard touchdown run by Kyle Burnam. Again Nelson added the point after, giving Marshall the 14-0 lead.
The Indians couldn't seem to make anything happen as they tried to move the ball up the field. Marshall's next score
came on a 53-yard touchdown pass from Travis Johnson to Burnam. With the extra point by Nelson, Marshall led 21-0 with 10
minutes left in the first half.
The rest of the first half belonged to the Lions. With just over seven minutes left, Johnson kept the ball for a quarterback
sneak for the first down. However, he was able to take it into the end zone for another score. Sam Chubb added the extra point
and Marshall led 28-0.
On second down, Alan Wolter intercepted a pass at Lawrenceville's 38-yard line. The Lions pushed the ball up the field
and then Johnson found Wolter again for another six points. Nelson's kick was blocked, but Marshall had a comfortable 34-0
lead.
Chance Rector, Jake Hoalt, Tyler Shotts, Ryan O'Rourke and Taylor Duncan were instrumental in shutting the Indians down
offensively.
Within just a couple of minutes, Johnson had found Wolter again and Nelson connected on the extra point. The Lions were
pounding the Indians 41-0.
In the next series of plays, Tyler Bishop, Steven O'Rourke and Josh Harrold also put pressure on Lawrenceville's offense.
With less than 20 seconds left in the first half, Lawrenceville turned the ball over to Marshall on downs. Marshall let
the clock run out and the score at half time was 41-0.
Marshall dominated the first half with 341 total yards to Lawrenceville's 83 total yards.
Things didn't get much better for the Indians as the third quarter started. Johnson continued to march the ball up the
field with runs by Ryan Shumaker and Burnam and receptions by Duncan and Shotts.
On third down, the Johnson-Wolter duo scored again. Shumaker kicked the extra point and the Lions led 48-0.
As the third quarter ended, the Lions had a touchdown by Duncan called back on a holding call against the Lions.
Coach Troy Johnson used the big lead as an opportunity to get some of the younger players in the game. Marshall had to
punt the ball to the Indians on fourth down.
In for the Lions were Jerald Davis, Dylan Reed, Sam Chubb, and Patrick Parsley who made an impact defensively.
The Indians were able to get the ball into their end zone on a seven-yard run. The extra point was unsuccessful.
The Lions had another series of plays, but the game ended with Marshall winning 48-6.
