On the heels of two consecutive wins, the Marshall
Lions made the trip to Albion to take on the Edward County Lions last Friday night.
From the very beginning, Marshall had control of the game. Edwards County’s defense couldn’t
stop the Lions’ running game. Quarterback Taylor Duncan only attempted seven passes the whole game while the Lions piled
on 380 rushing yards. By the fourth quarter, many Marshall reserves were given a chance to play as Marshall took the game
49-6.
Marshall’s first round of plays seemed to be the Andre Strohm show. On his second run, he broke
several tackles and took it all the way to the Edward County’s 23 yard line. Jacob Duncan had a good 13-yard run down
to the 10 yard line. Strohm dove just short of the end zone, but took it in on the next play.
The offensive line made up
of Colby Boyer, Brendan Bartnick, Jared Boyll, Dalton McNeely, Jacob Minnich and Tyler Bishop provided excellent blocking
that opened up the field for the Marshall running backs.
Luke Nelson made the extra point to give the Lions an early 7-0 lead.
Minnich kicked off to the EC
Lions. Conor Littleton tackled Chad Smith, who took the kick off. Quarterback Smith completed a 15-yard pass to R. J. Turner
out to the 40 yard line for a first down. Smith was pressured by Minnich, Boyll, Bishop, Jacob Duncan and Dalton Sanders
and that forced Edwards County to punt on fourth down. A fair catch was called by Patrick Parsley.
On Marshall’s next possession, they kept the same game plan as before and kept the ball on the ground.
This time it was Parsley who moved the ball up the field. With three first down runs in a row, Parsley took the ball into
the end zone from the one yard line. Nelson again made the extra point and Marshall led 14-0.
From about three minutes
left in the first quarter, Edwards County kept the ball for the remainder of the quarter. Aaron Rhoads, Boyll, Bishop, Boyer,
Sanders, J. Duncan, and Logan Cannady continued to pressure the quarterback and stop the run. Edwards County also received
two penalties, one for delay of game and one for holding.
Smith completed a short pass, but the first quarter ended with Smith being sacked by Sanders.
To begin the second quarter, Edwards County punted with Bishop getting a piece of the ball. Marshall got
four first downs with a complete pass to Littleton and runs by Strohm. Parsley ran the ball and then T. Duncan over-threw
Austin Wetnight.
On third down and 13 yards to go, T. Duncan faked a hand-off to J. Duncan and hit Strohm downfield. Strohm
took the ball into the end zone for a 31-yard pass play. The extra point was good to give Marshall a dominating 21-0 lead.
Edwards County’s Nathan Winemiller took the kick off at the 15 and ran it back to the 41 yard line. Parsley was
able to trip him up and Sam Wetherell came in to bring him down. Smith had an incomplete pass and then Bo Whistle was given
the ball but was brought down for a loss by Sanders. On third down, Boyll intercepted a pass giving the Lions possession of
the ball again.
T. Duncan kept the ball and ran for good yardage. He then found Littleton open and completed the pass
to him. J. Duncan ran the ball in from the one yard line for Marshall’s fourth touchdown. Nelson hit the extra point,
and Marshall led 28-0 with over seven minutes left in the first half.
Smith took the kickoff at the 15 yard line and took it to the 42 yard line. Trey Trudeau brought Smith
down. Whistle was given the ball on the next few plays, and he pounded out some yardage on the ground. Strohm, Parsley, Bishop,
Rhoads, and Trudeau tried to keep him under check. He took the ball all the way down to the six yard line. From there, Smith
found Turner for a touch down. The two-point attempt was knocked away, but Edwards County was finally on the board 6-28.
Parsley took the kick off and found open field down the side lines. He broke a tackle and dove into the
end zone for a touchdown. The special team players provided excellent blocking for Pars-ley. With the extra point, Marshall
quickly extended their lead to 29 (35-6).
With 35 seconds left in the first half, Edwards County turned the ball over on downs and the half ended
with Marshall leading 35-6.
Minnich kicked off to begin the second half and Whistle was stopped at the 31 yard line by Dylan Reed
and Kody Kile. Edwards County kept the ball on the ground and gained some yards. Edwards County was called for illegal procedure
but was able to get a first down on a pass from Smith to Turner.
On the first down play, Trudeau, Parsley, and Bishop stopped Whistle from getting much on the run. On
second down, Trudeau sacked the quarterback. On third down, pressure was put on the quarterback by Trudeau and Rodney Trout-man
which resulted in Edwards County having to punt on fourth down.
Strohm picked up about 20 yards for another first down. J. Duncan carried the ball putting the Lions
at the 45 yard line. T. Duncan attempted a pass to Dustin Morey which was intercepted.
Edwards County was four and out and punted back to Marshall. Parsley received the punt and then added
about six yards on the next play. On second down, Strohm broke loose for another long gain. This set up the next play where
T. Duncan found Morey in the end zone for a touchdown. With the extra point, Marshall moved out to a 42-6 lead.
Marshall kicked off and Troutman, Reed, and Tru-deau made a good stop on the return. Smith attempted a
pass which was knocked away by Cannady. Michael Brown was in the game and made a good stop on Whistle. This brought up another
punt on fourth down.
In the next two plays, the Lions took the ball 76 yards for another touchdown. John Kuhn, Adam Kendall,
Nick Kahl, and McNeely provided good blocking on the offensive line to set up the score.
Coach Todd Evers continued to let the reserves have some playing time. Paul Wieland, Taylor Sanders, Taylor
Maurer, Brock Hook, and Kile provided good defense to stop Edwards County from gaining many yards.
With about ten minutes left in the game, Austin Osborn caused a fumble and Sam Wetherell was able to recover
for the Lions. Taylor Sanders was put in as the quarterback. Kile, Hook, and Sanders ran the ball well. Sanders also completed
a pass to Maurer.
Nolan Miller, Zach Bartnick, Adam Kendall, John Kuhn and Justin Lewis provided the blocking on the offensive
line. Marshall was assessed two penalties.
Kile carried the ball just short of the end zone. On Marshall’s last
play of the game, Sanders kept the ball and was stopped just short of a touchdown.
The game ended with Marshall winning
